How to Make Olive Oil at Home Without a Press

Olive oil is a popular ingredient in many kitchens, used for cooking, dressing, and even as a beauty product. While commercial olive oil is widely available, making your own olive oil at home can be a rewarding and cost-effective endeavor. If you don’t have access to an olive press, don’t worry – there are alternative methods to extract olive oil at home. In this article, we will guide you through the process of making olive oil at home without a press.

Step 1: Choose Your Olives

The first step in making olive oil at home is to select the right olives. There are two types of olives to choose from: green olives and black olives. Green olives will yield a lighter olive oil with a peppery flavor, while black olives will produce a richer, more robust oil. Fresh olives are ideal, as they contain more oil than dried ones. You can purchase olives from a local olive orchard or online.

Step 2: Rinse and Soak the Olives

Before extracting the oil, rinse the olives to remove any dirt or debris. Then, soak the olives in water for 12 to 24 hours. This process helps to soften the olives and make them easier to process. After soaking, drain the olives and discard the water.

Step 3: Cook the Olives

Place the soaked olives in a pot and cover them with water. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and simmer for about 20 minutes. The olives should be soft enough to be easily pierced with a fork. Once cooked, remove the pot from the heat and let the olives cool.

Step 4: Blend the Olives

Transfer the cooled olives to a blender or food processor. Add a small amount of water to help the blending process. Blend the olives until they form a smooth paste. This step is crucial for extracting the oil, as the paste will be pressed in the next step.

Step 5: Press the Olive Paste

While you can’t use a traditional olive press, you can still extract oil from the olive paste using a mason jar and a wooden spoon. Place a piece of cheesecloth or a fine cloth over the mouth of a mason jar. Pour the olive paste onto the cheesecloth, then use the wooden spoon to press the paste against the cloth. This action will squeeze out the oil, which will collect in the jar below.

Step 6: Strain and Store the Olive Oil

Once you have extracted the olive oil, strain it through a fine sieve or cheesecloth to remove any remaining particles. The oil can be stored in a dark, cool place in an airtight container for up to a few months. Enjoy your homemade olive oil as you would any commercial olive oil, knowing that you’ve made it yourself.
